HOLDING SPACE

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HOLD SPACE?

Holding space means staying vigilant only for love. It means remembering the truth of you as perfect love, even in the midst of fearful feelings, perceived problems, attack thoughts, physical ailments, mental chaos, and emotional discord.

When upsetting events or thoughts about events trigger upsetting feelings, it can be challenging to even be willing to hold space for healing, but it only takes an instant of willingness to release anything that doesn’t allow you to know and feel the peace of your love. In that conscious instant, you can pause, take a breath, get grounded in love, and choose to experience something else.

Holding space invokes trust. Trusting that on some level you are okay. That everyone and everything is okay on some level. That you can release anything that gets in the way of feeling okay. That you can tap into the intelligence of the larger organism for help. That you can and will heal and learn. That you are a force of nature.

Holding space means to surrender. It requires relinquishment of all attachment to the outcome. You aim the arrow of your intention toward the target and you let go. You offer your gifts to someone else and you let go. You offer your service to the world and you let go.

Holding space involves wisdom. Wisdom to know that you can only control what thoughts you cultivate in your mind and what choices you make. Acknowledging that you can’t control other people’s choices or the outcome of anything. Knowing what you are and aren’t responsible for is liberating and empowering for everyone.

Holding space ultimately empowers you and everyone else. If you feel drained, exhausted, martyred, or resentful, you are missing some key piece of holding space. You may be holding a belief that you are responsible for other people’s emotions or wellness or making them responsible for yours.

Holding space requires calm, grounded energy, alive with spirit and power and purpose. It requires balance and compassionate non-attachment. It requires the willingness to be the space. The space of infinite possibility and mystery and grace.

Holding a loving space is healing in and of itself. It is helpful to maintain this kind of loving presence, not only in healing work, but as a way of life. The more you can cultivate the mindfulness of loving presence in your daily life, the more you will accelerate your learning and healing journey.
